Stage Collapses Due To Strong Winds In Mexico, 9 People Killed And Over 50 Injured

On the evening of May 22, tragedy struck at a campaign event for the Citizens' Movement party in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. Footage posted on social media captured the harrowing moments following the sudden collapse of a large stage, as high winds tore through the area, sending attendees into a panic. People were seen running and screaming amidst the chaos as the powerful gusts dismantled the concert-style structure.

The disaster claimed the lives of nine people, including eight adults and one child, and left around 50 others injured. The collapse occurred in the affluent city of San Pedro Garza Garcia, near Monterrey. Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia took to social media to confirm the fatalities and reported that dozens of injured individuals were being treated at local clinics, with some requiring immediate surgery.

Jorge Alvarez Maynez, the presidential candidate for the centrist Citizens' Movement party, provided further details on the incident. He explained that an unexpected gale force wind caused the stage to collapse without warning. Video footage revealed the structure suddenly tipping forward into the crowd, causing politicians and attendees to scatter in terror.

“It was a very atypical event because normally the weather gives some warning as it intensifies. What we experienced happened in just a few seconds: A gale came, a sudden wind, and unfortunately, it collapsed the stage, resulting in a fatal accident,” Alvarez Maynez recounted. He expressed his commitment to suspending campaign activities and called for a thorough investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.

Among the injured was Alvarez Maynez's campaign coordinator, Laura Ballesteros, who suffered a broken foot. Mayoral candidate for San Pedro Garza Garcia, Lorenia Canavati, announced on social media her coordination with authorities to aid those affected and their families.

In the aftermath, members of Mexico's national guard and army were deployed to assist at the scene. Interior Minister Luisa Alcalde assured the public via social media that the government was providing support. Governor Garcia also issued a warning for residents to remain indoors due to the ongoing strong thunderstorms in the region.
