In this video, we discuss how social media can be highly addictive and distort our sense of reality. It can lead to, us chasing unrealistic expectations in life and cause strong attachment to our beliefs.
Social media has the capability of causing a release of dopamine or the feel-good chemical, which is the same chemical that is released by your brain when you do things like, eat cake or use intoxicants.
Not only it is capable, but is rather designed to function this way.
In a 2017 interview, Sean Parker, the first president of Facebook stated:
"we needed to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever ... It's a social validation feedback loop ... You're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology ... The inventors [Mark [Zuckerberg], Kevin Systrom on Instagram] understood this, consciously, and we did it anyway."
I hope this was meaningful and helpful for you. :)
