Khartoum protest coincides with visit by UN envoy

(17 Feb 2022) Sudanese security forces on Thursday used tear gas to try to disperse protesters who took to the streets of the capital to protest the coup.
Sudan has plunged into turmoil with near-daily street protests since the October takeover by the military.
The coup upended Sudan's transition to democratic rule that began after three decades of isolation under former President Omar al-Bashir.
The demonstrators demand the establishment of a fully civilian government to lead the transition.
The protest came as the United Nations envoy to Sudan visited the capital for talks.
Volker Perthes met the head of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan.
The envoy, who also heads the Integrated Transition Assistance Mission (UNITAMS), said they discussed the way forward for the nation.
Perthes told reporters he had spoken to Burhan about the necessity of creating a suitable climate to resolve the crisis.
