40 on 40: Terry Branstad
The Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues is pleased to host the 40 on 40 project, a groundbreaking series of 40 video interviews of Chinese and U.S. policymakers produced by the Shanghai Institute of American Studies, the Center for American Studies at Fudan University, and The Paper, a Chinese digital media outlet. The series commemorates the fortieth anniversary of diplomatic ties between the People's Republic of China and the United States.
Ambassador Terry Branstad, appointed in 2017 by President Donald Trump as the U.S. ambassador to China, recalls the first visit of President Xi Jinping to the United States in April 1985 as the young leader of an agricultural delegation. Branstad hosted Xi in his capacity as the governor of Iowa at the time and became convinced by that visit, and his many other interactions with Chinese officials, that the U.S.-China relations is the most important bilateral relationship in the world.
