Jakub Jakóbowski, an expert on China's economic and political relations with Europe and Deputy Director at the Centre for Eastern Studies, joined us to explain why France may be trying to forge a closer bond with China by announcing high-level dialogue on strategic, economic, financial and cultural issues.
A meeting between the foreign minister of China, Wang Yi, and France, Jean-Noël Barrot, took place in Beijing. It comes at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump is undermining global trade by imposing or threatening to impose tariffs on trading partners, including the EU and China. This may cause Europe to look to China as a more reliable partner.
