Lesotho Relies on Assumptions to Manage Waste, Not Data

Lesotho's Minister of Environment and Forestry, Thabo Mofosi, says the country's waste management systems have for too long relied on assumptions rather than data.

Mofosi hopes the Waste Characterisation Training, held in Maseru from June 15–16, 2026, will help address this challenge and move the country towards more sustainable waste management practices.

Waste characterisation is the process of identifying and measuring the different types of waste generated by households, businesses and institutions. The data collected helps decision-makers understand what waste is being produced, in what quantities, and how best to manage it.

The training is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme and the Government of Japan.
