Spinal fractures are breaks or cracks of one or more bones that make up the spinal column. These are also called vertebral fractures. There are several types of spinal fractures. Minor fractures occur when the posterior portion of the vertebrae has broken or cracked. Major spinal fractures occur in the anterior part of the vertebrae.

Spinal fractures may be stable or unstable. Stable fractures do not usually cause neurological problems or spinal deformities. Unstable fractures, however, can result in these complications.
The spine is made up of 33 individual bones called vertebrae. The vertebrae are numbered and divided into four regions.

A typical vertebra consists of a body and a vertebral arch, which has several processes for articular and muscular attachments. The spinal nerves branch off your spinal cord in pairs and travel
through small openings between your vertebrae called the intervertebral foramina.
