The spine is made up of 33 individual bones called vertebrae. The vertebra are numbered and divided into four regions. Intervertebral discs form partially moveable joints between vertebral bodies, which allow spine movement and help absorb shock. The sacroiliac joints are located near the end of the spine to connect the spine and pelvis. These joints act as shock-absorbing structures and normally move only a small amount.
