Tarzan of the Apes, first published in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is the story of a boy born of civilization—but raised by the wild. After his aristocratic English parents di3 in the African jungle, their infant son is taken in by a tribe of great apes, who raise him as one of their own.

In Disney’s version, Tarzan is raised by a gorilla named Kala after his parents are killed by a leopard. As he grows, he struggles to belong among the gorillas until he proves himself by defeating the same leopard. His life changes when he meets Jane Porter, a human explorer. Tarzan falls in love with her but is torn between staying with his jungle family or joining her in the human world. When the villain, Clayton, threatens the gorillas for profit, Tarzan rises to protect his family. In the end, Jane stays with Tarzan in the jungle, and he becomes their leader—not just a man of the wild, but a bridge between worlds.

He is often imagined swinging through trees with perfect strength and primal grace—barefoot, bare-chested, animal in form but not in mind. He teaches himself to read from the books his parents left behind, even though he doesn’t speak a word. He becomes stronger than man, smarter than beast, and belonging to neither.

When humans return, Tarzan meets Jane, and discovers the world he came from: one of manners, wealth, and lies. He learns he’s a lost English lord—but he doesn’t care. Though he can claim a title, a fortune, and a family… he doesn’t.

He returns to the jungle.
Because the wild raised him.
And he chose it—over everything else.

Tarzan is not a fairy tale.
He’s a myth about what happens when the world tries to civilize
something that was already whole.
