While everyday stress won't impact your hair, three types of hair loss are associated with high stress levels, including:
• Telogen Effluvium: This condition occurs when there’s a sudden shock to the system like that experienced with childbirth, surgery, rapid weight loss or any major, traumatic event such as a death in the family, divorce or an accident.

• Trichotillomania: The stress-induced impulse control disorder, trichotillomania, is a hair loss condition that drives people to pull out their own hair.

• Alopecia Areata: This autoimmune skin disease mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, causing hair loss on the scalp, face, and sometimes other areas of the body.

HairClub medical advisor Dr. Angela Phipps discusses telogen effluvium; what it is, what causes it and what can be done about it.

Some hair loss conditions go by the name of effluvium which means an outflow. Effluvium characteristically effect different phases of the hair growth cycle. Telogen effluvium happens when there is a change in the number of hair follicles growing hair.

If the number of active hair follicles drops significantly for any reason during the resting phase of the hair growth cycle there will be a significant increase in the dormant stage hair follicles. The result is shedding or telogen effluvium hair loss. Telogen effluvium appears as a diffuse thinning of hair on the scalp which may not be even all over. It can be a bit more severe in some areas of the scalp than others.

People with telogen effluvium never completely lose all their scalp hair but the hair can be noticeably thin in severe cases. Tolegen effluvium is fully reversible, the hair follicles are not permanently affected. There are just more hair follicles in the resting state than there should normally be.
