Krishna Naidoo - Is the preference for evolving dark energy evidence for modified gravity?

Abstract: Almost 30 years after its discovery, dark energy remains one of the central mysteries in cosmology. For most of that time, observations have supported the simplest explanation: a cosmological constant — vacuum energy that permeates all of space. However, recent results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) show a preference for models in which dark energy evolves over time — so-called dynamical dark energy. These models are largely phenomenological and do not provide a fundamental explanation for the origin of dark energy. In this talk, I will show how a class of modified gravity theories, specifically Horndeski gravity, can naturally produce the dynamical dark energy behaviour favoured by current data. I will discuss the implications for our understanding of gravity, the key predictions of these models, and how upcoming surveys can constrain or potentially rule them out.
