Luca Visinelli - Impact of the cosmic neutrino background on black hole superradiance

Black hole (BH) superradiance offers a powerful probe of new ultralight bosons through their interaction with spinning BHs. In this talk, I will discuss how the cosmic neutrino background, an elusive relic from the early Universe, can leave an imprint on these phenomena. When an ultralight scalar field couples to neutrinos via a tiny Yukawa interaction, the relic neutrinos generate effective thermal corrections that modify the scalar’s potential and can suppress the superradiant instability. Remarkably, even extremely weak couplings, as small as 10^(-16) for stellar-mass and 10^(-20) for supermassive BHs, can quench the growth of the instability, setting novel astrophysical bounds. I will present the theoretical framework behind this effect, discuss the impact of local neutrino clustering and other uncertainties, and show how BH observations can probe neutrino-scalar interactions far beyond laboratory reach.
