Advancing with Watercolor: Painting on Location - “Light Falls on the Brooklyn Bridge”
This video was done after a week of plein air painting with watercolor in New York City. It is part of a series of videos featuring Central Park, Bryant Park, Times Square, and Dumbo park at the Brooklyn Bridge. The workshop lasted six days and each day was a new adventure . Today we are in the busy area of Times Square, looking down into the middle where there’s many billboards, people and traffic. We simplify the scene through an extensiv painting at the Brooklyn bridge park, just at the foot of the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The day is wonderful dry clear and beautiful. The scale of the scene is immense and along with that a huge amount of details. The challenge is to reduce the details to a few patterns lines and shapes that suggest buildings the roads the windows the cranes etc. enough to give an impression of the complexity but not everything. The main focus in this painting is under the bridge looking through to see the other side of the river, boats, even a lone seagull flying under the shadows of the Brooklyn Bridge. As I am working through the painting students are coming up telling me that they must leave, the afternoon is wearing on and our troop is reduced to three or four. It’s a sad moment when the workshop comes to an end. But we are so lucky to have this date together painting the Manhattan Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge under the bright sun.
In each video I will address some of the challenges with each motive and ways to meet those challenges. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working in the city of New York under an open sky that we did.
