The Transition from Oral to Written Culture | Dr. Jama Musse Jama | TEDxHargeisa

Somalis are an oral society, our history is narrated through chains of poems and song, from generation to generation, and it is fact that with the aging and death of each Abwaan (Poet/Narrator) we lose part of that history. Dr. Jama takes us through the transition from an oral to a written culture and the role that the Hargeysa International Book Fair has in promoting a culture of reading and writing. Dr. Jama is a well-known and respected ethnomathematician and author of Somali language and literature. He has a PhD in African Studies specializing in Computational Linguistics of African Languages. He is the Director of Redsea Cultural Foundation and Hargeysa Cultural Centre. He is the Founder/Organizer of Hargeysa International Book Fair, one of the most important literature festivals and book celebration in Africa. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
