Lakkhana Jataka (#11)
The Buddha told this story when Devadatta caused a schism in the Sangha and took 500 monks away from the Buddha. Sariputta, the Buddha's Right Hand and one of his two Chief Disciples, was tasked with bringing them back. Upon their return, the Buddha explained that this was not the first time Sariputta saved many others, while Devadatta led others to devastation.
In the past, an old deer had two young sons - Kala and Lakkhana. When the season changed, the deer had to go from the plains up to the mountains for safety. Kala and Lakkhana were each tasked with leading 500 deer up to the mountains. Owing to Kala's personality and his choices, many deer were killed on the way to the mountains. On the way back, Kala repeated his mistakes and the rest of the herd died. Lakkhana, on the other hand, was observant and made good decisions, which kept all 500 members of his herd alive all the way to the mountains and on the way back.
Wat San Fran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.
