How to LEARN effectively | Five evidence-based tips

How can you learn most effectively? If you have learning something on your New Years resolutions, then you should invest some time planning how to learn it most effectively. In this video I talk about five ideas for effective learning.
1) Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset. Carol Dweck, a Professor of Psychology, introduced the importance of developing "The Growth Mindset" and the power of adding the word "yet", and studies have backed up how effective cultivating this mindset is for successful learning.
2) Metacognition is thinking about your own thinking. This idea from cognitive psychology suggests that taking time to actively reflect on your own learning, to analyze what is going well and what isn't, to plan and self-assess is incredibly important. Don't just spend your time learning, spend some time improving the quality of your learning and reflecting on the learning process.
3) Simply & Explain. These are two steps in the famed Feynman technique for learning, and are particularly useful when presented with challenge and complex ideas. Take these ideas and try to simplify them again and again in your mind until you can explain the concept in simple language as if you were teaching it to someone else. Many concepts appear almost obvious after you have mastered them sufficiently to explain them in this way.
4) Questions. I love questions, and think they are one of the most important parts of learning. Whenever you are leaning something, make it a goal to come up with a list of really good questions. A great learning session is one that generates great questions. This increases the depth of your learning, you aren't just superficially consuming what other people tell you, but really wrestling with the material and finding new avenues to explore. I like phrasing of "what do you notice?" and "what do you wonder"? Thinking about those prompts will hopefully generate a whole bunch of new questions.
5) Intrinsic vs Extrinsic Motivation. Intrinsic motivation - motivation coming from you for the subject itself - turns out to be more effective than extrinsic motivation like that you should learn something because you have to take that particular course. Motivation is hard to change inside you, but if you take the time to appreciate the subject for itself, and find enjoyment in the pursuit of the subject in its own right, this can help your success even if initially you were only learning it for some extrinsic reason.
