Patrick Kavanagh Returns Home to Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan, Ireland 1966
Patrick Kavanagh returns to his home place of Inniskeen in County Monaghan.
In this excerpt from the programme Kavanagh reflects on the lines of his poem ‘Inniskeen Road’. Kavanagh comments on his ambivalent relationship with his home place, and how the most exciting periods of his life were spent elsewhere in places like London, Paris, Rome and New York.
A road, a mile of kingdom, I am king of banks and stones and every bloomin’ thing.
Kavanagh also describes here the three times in his life in which he experienced excitement in relation to his work. The first time was when he received a letter from the editor of The Independent to say that three of his poems had been accepted for publication. The second was when he got a letter from George Russell asking him to send him more poems. The third was when the editor of The Spectator contacted him to say that they would publish three of his poems.
This episode of ‘The Writers’ was broadcast 10 October 1966.
Other poets in the series included Austin Clarke and Máirtín Ó Cadhain.
