How To Make a St Brigid’s Cross, Ireland 1995

How to make a Saint Brigid’s Cross and the traditions that accompany them.

Ten year old Paul McGrath learned how to make St Brigid’s crosses from his mother, who is from County Donegal. Rushes, elastic bands and scissors are required.

In the days prior to St Brigid’s Day on 1 February Paul’s mother makes three or four of the crosses. On the evening before St Brigid’s Day they are wrapped in a scarf and sprinkled with holy water and put outside where they remain overnight.

On St Brigid’s Day the crosses are placed above doors in the house, and in farm outhouses and barns.

They keep everybody safe in the house.

This episode of ‘How Do You Do’ was broadcast on 27 January 1995. The presenter is Mary Fitzgerald.
