Difference between Big Blue Water Filters and Fiberglass Tank Filters

There are a lot of little differences between the two.

Big Blue Housing with Filters have lower max flow rates (typically 4 GPM as the max). Although they can handle higher flow rates, the filter cartridges that go inside tend to have lower flow rates for maximum efficiency. The great benefit to these are the lower start up costs and the easy maintenance that any home user can do if willing to.

Fiberglass tanks with an in and out valve will last longer because it has more media but over time. Water creates channels that prevent the full usage of the media bed. Overall though they are a great alternative to the big blue housing setup but cost slightly more.

Fiberglass tanks with a backwashing valve have the best set up but also the most expensive. They get the best of both worlds where the bed never really channels because it can reset the bed with a backwash and they have higher flow rates because it carries more media. The main downside is the start up cost which can be much more due to the power head. The power head alone would probably carry most of the cost simply because of its electronics. In the end it has the best flow rates, the longest life, and the least amount of clogging.
