Before I could start the van build, I had to strip everything out to start fresh. I began by drilling out all the rivets that held in the sheets on the walls and ceilings. I removed all the fibreglass insulation and then the floor ply wood.

Next I removed the vent whirly birds and lights on the roof. I cut out 2mm aluminium squares to cover all the remaining holes on the roof and in the floor. I sprayed them with white rust spray paint to match the van colour and to ensure the aluminium doesn't oxidise (aluminium doesn't rust).

I used Roof & Gutter Sika Flex generously to seal and adhere these squares to the van. Once all this had set, I removed rust on the roof with a light abrasive sanding disk that can be mounted in a drill. I also used a metal wire brush on a grinder inside for more stubborn rust spots.

After this I blew out all the rust, and washed the floors clean with water and dish washing detergent. Once dried I gave all sanded areas a coat of rust prohibiting spray paint.
