Right Livelihood: Did Your Work Matter? — The Buddha's 5th Step (Eightfold Path 5 of 8)

Most of us spent decades working. Building something. Providing for someone. And now, in the quiet of later life, a question arrives that we didn't expect: did any of it matter?
In this fifth teaching in our series on the Noble Eightfold Path, we look at Right Livelihood (Sammā Ājīva) — the Buddha's teaching on how we make our living, and what it means when the working years are behind us. We complete the Ethics (Sīla) section of the path, and we ask the deeper question Right Livelihood asks of those of us in the later seasons of life: how do I live now?

0:00 – Introduction to the Lesson
1:10 – Right Livelihood
4:13 – Practice 1: The Mirror Reflection
5:08 – Practice 2: Protect One Hour
6:02 – Practice 3: The Simplification
7:37 – Next Week

Three practices for this week:

The Mirror Reflection — looking back at your working life with honest, gentle eyes
Protect One Hour — building your week around the practice, perhaps for the first time
The Simplification — releasing one thing that takes energy from the path

Sources in this teaching:

The five wrong livelihoods — Vanijja Sutta, AN 5.177
Reflecting like a mirror — Instructions to Rāhula, MN 61
The blind turtle — Chiggala Sutta, SN 56.48

The voice you hear is mine. I write every script and narrate every video, drawing on 55 years of meditation practice in the Theravada tradition.
Next week: Right Effort — which turns out to be almost nothing like what most of us think effort means.
New teachings every Sunday. One Minute Buddhism shorts throughout the week.
See you on the path.
