Explosion at Northern Spain Mine Kills Five, Several Injured

At least five people have died following an explosion at a mine in northern Spain, according to officials.

The blast occurred at the Cerredo mine in Degaña, Asturias, around 09:30 local time (07:30 GMT) on Monday. The mine is located approximately 450 kilometers (278 miles) northwest of Madrid.

Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a "problem with a machine" at the mine. Ambulances, fire crews, and rescue services were dispatched to the site. In addition to the five fatalities, at least four other people were injured. Initially, two individuals were reported missing, but authorities confirmed by early afternoon that they had been accounted for.

The five victims, aged between 32 and 54, were all residents of León, a province in northwestern Spain. The injured workers were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The mining rescue brigade, which also deployed its canine unit, joined the efforts to assist in the aftermath.

Local media, citing an Asturian spokesperson, reported that the workers were at the mine under a permit to extract minerals for graphite production. The site had previously been a major mine before its closure in 2018, and since then, it had been intermittently used by private companies to extract anthracite coal.

The exact number of workers present at the time of the explosion remains unknown.

In response to the tragedy, Adrián Barbón, President of Asturias, declared two days of mourning in the region. The civil protection plan for the region was activated at its lowest level, indicating that the situation is localized and manageable with available resources.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, offering his support during this difficult time.
