Bubi’s Son, Zindoga Turns 14! | The Elephant Bull Who Helped Save Khanyisa

Zindoga is the bull who helped donate blood for an emergency transfusion for Khanyisa at a time when the calf’s health took a bad dip. He truly helped to save her life and the two continue to share a friendly bond when together in the bush.

Zindoga means “the only one” or “solitary” in the Shona language commonly spoken in Zimbabwe and by many in South Africa.

Zindoga is certainly never alone, always surrounded by his herd and his adoring mother Bubi, but the way he came into the world led to us giving this unexpected bull his name.

Born 25 October 2007, Zindoga was an unexpected addition to the herd. Bubi, his mother, gave no sign of being pregnant, nor did she show any pre labour signals.

Overnight she gave birth to a young elephant calf in the elephant homestead. Our Carers heard no strange noises or stirring overnight. His father could be a wild bull elephant in the reserve — it is not known, but his mother remains a form and loyal part of his days in our reserve.

Bubi was rescued from Zimbabwe where she was part of the original orphan herd and it is believed that she lost her own mother to poachers. Her demeanour is skittish and she doesn’t trust easily, but the birth of her son showed she had settled down happily in her new wilderness in South Africa and was no longer stressed.

Her son seems to give her an anchor and a purpose as Zindoga is never far from Bubi, with this mother dividing her time between her son and adopted orphan, Khanyisa.

Zindoga is growing in age and happy to share the attention of Bubi as he becomes more independent. He thoroughly enjoys spending his time playing and sparring with Mambo, Pisa, Limpopo and being around the elephants his age or younger.

The sparring helps him to develop as a bull and to establish himself in his unique blended herd, among the bulls and cows. He continues to enhance his skills as a young male and to show a bit more dominance as he grows up.

Zindoga is a little less mischievous than his friend Mambo and likes to be a part of the action. But he is also content to forage to the side by himself. Wherever he turns though, his mother is never far from sight.

Zindoga and Bubi stay in the same quadrant of the elephant homestead at night when they return after 12 hours of roaming and foraging in the reserve, along with older bull Somopane who provides a disciplinarian and mentor role for Zindoga.
