In this video, I forge a spurred fire poker with a leaf handle. The spurred portion of the poker utilizes a forge weld.
Forge welding requires scarfing the ends that are being welded. Scarfing achieves 3 purposes, which are; creating a feather edge to blend into the parent metal making the weld appear as seamless as possible. The second purpose of the scarf is to add extra volume to the area to be welded, this extra material is needed as the weld is hammered shut to provide sufficient mass after the welding process is done. In the example of the video, the nature of the self weld introduces sufficient mass so as not to require upsetting the end of the bar. The third reason for scarfing is to create a convex surface on both surfaces. This convex surface allows the pieces to make the first contact in the centre, thus driving out flux and scale as the weld begins to join.
After welding the loop is cut and shaped into the spurred end.
The handle of the poker features a simple forged leaf motif. The leaf begins as a bullet-shaped piece that is "squashed" down creating a classic leaf shape. A hot chisel is then used to create a stylized veining for the leaf. After drawing out a long taper behind the leaf, it is bent around to form the handle. The rustic nature of this design lends itself to a high level of imperfections, making it a good training ground for the beginner smith.
