Finishing the Corinthian Helmet - The Crest

#blacksmith #blacksmithing #armour

In this video, I make a crest for my bronze Corinthian style, hoplite helmet.
The crest is constructed from two pieces of silicon bronze which are shaped over a steel form. These pieces are then embossed with decorative relief. For this, I chose the iconic Minian bull from a fresco found in a palace in Crete from about 1700BCE. 1000 years too early for the time period of our helmet, but perhaps classical greeks were inspired by their prehistory as we are today.
In any event, the relief was made using the repousse technique, utilizing pitch as a backer. The two "mirror opposite" panels were then welded together and bolted to the top of the helmet. The crest was then partially filled with black silicone caulking and tufts of horsehair were inserted into this to create the finished look.
