2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Review: The Perfect Transition Vehicle to EVs?
In this review, Jenny checks out the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in its top Exceed Tourer trim.
She goes through the jam-packed features of this SUV highlighting why she believes this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is better than a normal hybrid. Mitsubishi is a leader in PHEV technology, having brought them to market over 10 years ago. Jenny explores whether the Outlander PHEV can be the perfect transition vehicle for those who want the benefits of electric while still hanging onto the perceived convenience of internal combustion.
00:00 Introduction and Overview
01:12 Exterior Design
02:19 Performance and Range
02:54 Charging Times
04:11 Driving Experience
07:15 Interior Features
08:46 Rear seats
09:33 Key Safety Features
10:04 Conclusion and Pricing
There is an internal combustion engine, a revised atkinson cycle 2.4 litre petrol engine that is specifically tuned to work efficiently in the plug-in hybrid setup. The fuel tank capacity has also been increased to 56 liters from the outgoing model.
The engine is paired with a 20 kWh battery and twin motors, resulting in a combined output of 185kW of power and 450Nm of torque, which is impressive. There are two standout features worth mentioning here.
The first is the size of the battery. With a 20 kWh capacity, it is considered quite large for a plug-in hybrid and provides a functional 84km of pure electric range, making it ideal for daily pure EV driving.
The second is the presence of two competent motors, a rarity in PHEVs as many pure EVs only have one. This feature transforms the Outlander into a functional electric vehicle, enabling it to drive in AWD with a longer pure EV range, instead of just paying lip service to pure EV capability.
There are two different inputs available on the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - Type 2 and CHAdeMO - providing users with more options. With the standard 240v wall charger included with the vehicle, it takes approximately 9.5 hours to reach a full charge. However, utilizing a public CHAdeMO fast charger can reduce the charging time to as little as 38 minutes.
Another noteworthy feature of the Outlander PHEV is its V2X capability, allowing for vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-home, and vehicle-to-grid functionalities. This means that users can power not only their appliances from the 20 kWh battery but also their home in the same way as a home battery system.
Moreover, there is an option to feed power back to the grid, making it a sophisticated technology that is not commonly seen in many of the full EVs available on the market today.
