AI Only Climbs Hills It Can See | Outside Insights with Zach Pousman

AI progress looks lumpy because it is lumpy — and the reason has less to do with intelligence than with measurement. Fields with clean scoreboards (chess, code, protein folding) sprint. Fields without them (taste, judgment, care, long-horizon strategy) sit in the slow lane. Call it the streetlight effect, now with GPUs: the labs search where the light is, and the light is wherever someone bothered to build a benchmark. AlexNet needed ImageNet. AlphaFold needed CASP. No benchmark, no breakthrough.
