The phorid fly, sometimes called the humpbacked fly, breed and feed on decaying organic matter around moisture. They are commonly found around kitchen and bathroom sinks, floor drains, spoiled food, trash cans, potted plants, leaky sinks and pipes, or even litter boxes, feeding off the decaying fecal matter.
Phorid flies are similar to drain flies and fruit flies in that they are considered filth flies. Phorid flies are very small, typically around an eighth of an inch long. They can range in color, but are usually a dull brown.
To control phorid flies, first increase sanitation in your home. Phorid flies need moisture and decaying matter to survive. If you have any spoiled or rotting food, dispose of it. Be sure potted plants don’t hold too much water and stay moist. Fix any leaky pipes and septic lines. If you have a cat, keep the litter box clean and take out the litter collection every day.
Next, treat the drains in your home or business with Forid Drain Gel Cleaner. This is a concentrated biological product designed to treat organic matter build-up in sinks, drains, and garbage disposals. Pour the Forid around the lip of the drain so that it coats and runs down the sides of the drain. This process should be repeated daily for five to seven days.
Next, use Pyrid to kill any stragglers. Pyrid is a pyrethrin aerosol that provides quick kickdown kills. This is also great to have for eliminating many other pests.
You can also use Musca-Stik fly traps to trap any remaining phorid flies. This is an odor and insecticide-free trap. It uses a combination of sticky orange paper and pheromones to attract flies. Hang or place this around drains and phorid fly activity.
Prevent phorid flies from returning by regularly cleaning drains with Forid, and by keeping your home or business clean. Don’t let food spoil on countertops, regularly take out the trash, keep litter boxes clean, minimize moist soil in potted plants, and eliminate as much moisture as you can.
