Earwigs, also known as pincher bugs, are small, bizarre looking insects known to invade structures in massive populations or even cause damage to gardens or other lawn ornamentals.

Earwigs are small, brown, slender insects that vary in length depending on the species, but generally range from ¼ of an inch to 1 inch. Across all species, these insects are recognizable for the pincers on their rears, which led to their nickname pincher bugs. Male earwigs have more curved pincers while females have straight pincers. These pincers have multiple uses, from self-defense to establishing dominance.

Earwigs prefer to live in moist, undisturbed locations. Check in and around your home for areas high in humidity or spots where moisture collects. Outdoors, look for spots where standing water can form, and also spots that can retain high amounts of moisture like, bricks, wood piles, mulch beds and leaves.
If you suspect earwigs of attacking ornamentals or other garden plants, you can examine affected plants for signs of damage. Earwigs will eat leaves, forming ragged edges and holes. They’ll also leave behind small black droppings, which differentiates their activity from other pests, like snails who’ll leave behind visible mucus trails instead.
Indoors, you should check areas like your basement, garage, bathroom, laundry room and any room that can reasonably become very humid. Move boxes and clutter aside, and note any sites that will need to be addressed.
Check the outer perimeter of your structure for entry points earwigs can use to get into your home, like around doors, windows, or other cracks and voids in the wall. Take note of every site you find, as these will direct where you’ll focus your treatment.

After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time to start treatment.
Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry.
To get rid of earwigs on your property, you’ll need to use insecticides labeled for earwig control like, Reclaim IT, Ficam Insect Bait, and D-Fense Dust.

Prevention is essential to keeping pests in check. Even after you’ve applied pesticides, the best way to stop earwig activity is to make sure it can’t happen. Since earwigs are attracted to moisture, you’ll take measures to reduce the moisture content in and around your home and utilize common exclusion practices to prevent them from coming inside. This will make your property much less conducive for earwigs to inhabit, forcing them to seek shelter elsewhere.
To reduce moisture, repair any leaks and utilize air conditioning to reduce your structure’s overall moisture content.
Pick up leaf piles, bricks, firewood, & other debris, and clean out rain gutters and drain pipes so earwigs have less areas to inhabit.
Rake, dethatch, and aerate your lawn to encourage air circulation, and trim back tree branches to reduce shade and encourage proper water-retention in your lawn.
To stop earwigs and other pests from invading, repair any damaged door or window screens and seals.
Then, seal cracks and crevices along the interior and exterior perimeter of your structure with copper mesh and caulk.
