Coronation Special 1937 - Reels 3 And 4 (1937)
Coronation of King George VI (Prince Albert, Duke of York) and Queen Elizabeth (Duchess of York, Queen Mother). London.
Title reads - The crowning ceremony within the Abbey.
L/S as camera pans down the procession walking up the aisle, M/S of Princess Mary the Princess Royal walking with Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Princess Margaret, she chats to them. M/S of thrones as dignitaries assemble. M/S of Queen Mary walking through, boys carry her train. Queen Elizabeth walks up with ladies carrying her train. M/S as she walks up the steps to chair of estate. L/S pan down knave to Queen. Good M/S of Queen Mary, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret watching them from balcony. The Queen takes her place and attendants arrange her train.
The King makes his way up the aisle with his attendants, he takes his place in front of his chair of estate. M/S of Queen Elizabeth sat down. M/S of King stood up, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Doctor Cosmo Lang, begins the service asking all to acclaim their sovereign, he bows. M/S of the royal family on the balcony. The Archbishop asks if he will govern and he replies "I solemnly promise so to do". The King then signs the oath, he disrobes for anointing with holy oil. The Knights of the Garter bring canopy of cloth of gold. He approaches chair and sits in it canopy is brought and placed over him.
After this he puts on overdress of gold, his heels are touched with golden spurs of knighthood and the jewelled sword of state is brought by the Archbishop. He puts sword in scabbard, then takes it out and carries to the Archbishop. A collar and mantle made from gold cloth is placed around him. He receives the orb with cross, sapphire ring, glove and two sceptres. The Dean brings the crown over and the Archbishop lifts it high and places it on his head, M/S profile as he does this.
Peers put their crowns on as the royal family watches. A fanfare is played, he gets up and sits in another throne, where peers come to pay homage to him. M/S of Queen Elizabeth watching as they touch his crown and kiss his left cheek. M/S of his brothers doing this.
Queen Elizabeth kneels at the altar for her anointing, the golden canopy is brought over. M/S profile as she is crowned and given the sceptres. The family watch from the side. She moves to pay homage to the King and curtsies in front of him then moves up to her throne. Various shots as the King and Queen walk forward. Good shots of family watching. Various shots as they walk down the aisle to "God Save the King" .
