Why You Must Prepare for ICD-10 Now

The current implementation date for ICD-10 is October 2015. Physicians and hospitals must assume that ICD-10 will be in effect on this date.

Though ICD-11 is in its early stages of development, waiting until ICD-11 is available is not an option. Tom Gehring, Chief Executive Officer of San Diego County Medical Society, outlines five reasons not to wait for ICD-11 to update your data system:

1. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services mandates ICD-10.
2. Delaying prevents historical data capture.
3. ICD-11 might not be available for years.
4. Switching to ICD-11 is unfair to those who have already invested in ICD-10.
5. The American Medical Association recommends ICD-10 implementation now.
