Why Integrated Healthcare Delivery Is Inevitable

Healthcare consolidation is well-established and is likely to continue, says Curtis A. Cole, Esq. of Cole Pedroza, LLP. Now, integration is the emerging trend. With integration, physicians, facilities, and sometimes even third-party payers work together to achieve cost savings, enhanced profitability, and improved patient outcomes.

With a key goal of reigning in healthcare costs, the Affordable Care Act is driving the integration trend. Accountable Care Organizations are meant to realize cost savings while also improving patient outcomes. But according to Eric A. Klein, Esq. of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton, LLP, physician consolidation began well before the Affordable Care Act went into effect. Now, more than 50 percent of physicians nationally are employed, owned, or affiliated with hospital systems. He posits that declining reimbursements, uncertainty over healthcare reform, and additional administrative burdens are pushing physicians toward the "safe harbor" of employment.

Mr. Cole and Mr. Klein were featured speakers at The Doctors Company's Annual Agents Meeting, a forum where top insurance agents gather to discuss industry trends with dynamic thought leaders. The Doctors Company is proud to assist its agents in developing a deeper understanding of the trends that shape physicians' insurance coverage needs.
