Natalie Wood, talks about her boat and says, “It is easy on the boat.”
I interviewed Natalie on October 13, 1979, in Flagstaff, Arizona, two years before she died. She was promoting the movie "Meteor" which also starred Sean Connery and Brian Keith. She talked about her split from Robert Wagner and how they got back together. I had not seen the video since it aired in 1979, until today. I had chills when she talked about the boat. Natalie died on November 29, 1981, two years after this interview. The cause of death was "Drowning and other undetermined factors". She had been on the boat, named “Splendor”, with Robert Wagner and Christopher Walken, off Santa Catalina Island. It was never determined how she entered the water.
She was known for her screen roles in Miracle on 34th Street, Splendor in the Grass, Rebel Without a Cause, The Searchers, and West Side Story. She first worked in films as a child, then became a successful Hollywood star as a young adult, receiving three Academy Award nominations before she was 25 years old.
As a teenager, her performance in Rebel Without a Cause (1955) earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She starred in the musical films West Side Story (1961) and Gypsy (1962), and received Academy Award for Best Actress nominations for her performances in Splendor in the Grass (1961) and Love with the Proper Stranger (1963). Her career continued with films such as Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) and many more.
