GRAB THE BARF BAG! Chiang Dao to Pai (Skipping Chiang Mai) Thailand

Today was a LONG travel day! We took a yellow taxi songthaew from our hotel in Ban Tham to the Chiang Dao bus station. From there we caught the local bus going to Chiang Mai, but we got off at the Mae Malai Markets. From here we caught an air conditioned mini van through to Pai, our final destination. All up this cost 530 baht for the both of us, which at the time was about $22.50 AUD - not bad a price for a 138km journey!

The ‘easier’ option would have been to go from Chiang Dao to Chiang Mai and then catch the mini van from there to Pai. BUT: it would have cost 40 baht more ($1.65 AUD) and we would have travelled an extra 78km. So we opted for the ‘harder’ way and got off the bus at the turn off to Pai and waited for the mini van there. The reason our way was ‘harder’ is because we hadn’t booked anything and the mini vans normally leave Chiang Mai full, so we were hedging our bets and hoping that we’d get a seat. Of course we were in luck and managed to get the last 2 seats available! In all it took us 5 hours from door to door, so we’re glad we took the shorter option!

The drive up to Pai is notoriously windy, they even have souvenir t-shirts with road signs displaying people vomiting on them! There are apparently 762 turns in all (we’re taking the internet’s word for this, because really, who would ever try and count them!). April managed to get there just fine, however Tim got the real Pai experience and arrived looking a bit green!

We said goodbye to our jobs, sold all our belongings, and left Australia on a one-way ticket to Shanghai with just each other and our backpacks! We plan to travel the world for a year, see as much as possible, meet as many people as we can, and most importantly MAKE OUR MONEY LAST!
