Das Wohltempierte Klavier

Even though the public did not know the works of Bach immediately following his death, select works of his circulated among music fans and composers not so long after his passing. One of these works was Das Wohltempierte Clavier, 2 collections of preludes and fugues, each collection including 24 preludes and fugues, in each major and minor key. Bach intended for these pieces to be of study to the young and eager, and for recreation and study for those already skilled in the musical craft. These works became trendy in the underground scene in the late classical era, with Haydn and Mozart, and later Beethoven, studying them profusely. Hans von Bülow called the collection “The Old Testament” of music (referring to Beethoven Sonatas as the New Testament).
