Road Runner - John Zorn | Flemming Valmundsson

From my Master's exam from The Royal Danish Academy of Music 05.06.23

From the concert program:
The cartoons made by Chuck Jones and Michael Maltese, and the music by Carl W. Stalling that accompanied them, were the source of inspiration for John Zorn's "Road Runner" (1986). Using the peculiar timing of animated films and their quick editing fit well with Zorn's compositional style, which often includes segmented "blocks" of music with rapid changes between them. "I try to make my music a challenge, but I also enjoy the fact that my music annoys people." The score consists of notated segments, the aforementioned blocks with text cues, illegible cluster-scribbles, and actual cartoon characters from the series.
I heard this piece in my first year at this academy and fell in love with it immediately, as an experimental punk musician and as a fan of John Zorn's wild musical style (notably his grindcore-jazz band Naked City), but opted to not pick it up until I had matured more as an instrumentalist. Now there are no more excuses to make, here I am to play this piece for you. So sit back, picture yourself on a sick-day from primary school, home alone with no internet, you've put the Looney Tunes VHS cassette in, pressed play and run back to the sofa to get back under your duvet, and now you can watch and see if Wile E. Coyote can finally manage to catch that fucking bird. MEEP MEEP
