He Shot Down 12 German Aircraft In WWII. Went Back To War At 44

Robin Olds shot down 12 German aircraft in WWII.
Then he went back to war at 44.
In 1966 he took command of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing in Vietnam. Grew a handlebar mustache in deliberate defiance of Air Force regulations. Said they could court martial him after the war.
Then he planned Operation Bolo.
He had his F-4 Phantoms fly the exact same routes at the exact same speeds as the slower bombers the North Vietnamese loved to attack. The MiGs took the bait completely.
January 2nd 1967. 7 MiGs shot down in minutes. The largest single day air victory of the entire Vietnam War. Olds shot down one himself. His 16th career kill. At 44 years old.
His men carried him off the flight line on their shoulders.
He never made full general. The Air Force thought he was too much of a maverick. He thought leading from the front mattered more. History agrees with him.

🔥 Robin Olds was held back from promotion because he was too aggressive and too independent. Does America still produce commanders willing to lead from the front like Robin Olds? And do you think the military promotes the right people today? Drop your answer in the comments.
