I'm nursing my baby and my cycles are irregular, but I want another baby. What can I do?
You mentioned that you're baby is 11 months old and you're still breastfeeding, which is awesome, but you're also wanting to have another baby, and because of breastfeeding, your cycles aren't regular yet. You're wondering if there's anything you can do to regulate them and make it easier to conceive. Only 7% of women have their period shortly after their baby is born. And most, if they're still breastfeeding 12 to 24 months after their baby is born, are still just having irregular cycles, maybe just random spotting, but not regular periods. The hormones that support lactation actually suppress ovulation, and so if you're trying to conceive, this will make it really hard for you to know when (and even if) you're ovulating at all.
There's a couple of things to consider. The first is that your toddler has received so many benefits of breastfeeding for the first year of life, and you can continue for another month or so until your child reaches the 1st birthday, and then you should start giving 2 to 3 cups of whole milk each day. And there are some benefits of breastfeeding past a year, but they may not be as great as the benefits would be of you quitting if you're wanting to have another baby. Once you stop breastfeeding, your body will start to get into regular cycles again, and then you'll be able to time intercourse again with ovulation and more easily conceive. Especially if you had issues conceiving your first child, then this might be best for you so that you can start to get into a regular schedule again, predict ovulation, take tests, if necessary, and try to make it happen for you.
Your other option is to continue nursing your child while trying to conceive, but just cut back on the number of times you breastfeed each day, and that might help your body become fertile again. You'll just have to watch and see if you start having regular cycles. But again, if you've only had 4 periods since you had your baby, you might have to cut back a little bit so that your body can return to a fertile state. If you have more questions about it, talk with your doctor. And if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
