What should I expect after a D & C (Dilation and Curettage)?

You wanted to know what symptoms are normal to experience after a D & C (Dilation and Curettage). And typically speaking, a woman will have light bleeding or spotting for a day or two, and it's also normal to have a little bit of mild cramping, but the pain should not be severe and the bleeding should not be heavy. So if you're having heavy bleeding, or if you're having abdominal pain, or you develop a fever, or you notice that you have foul-smelling discharge coming from the vagina, call your healthcare provider and let them know. It's also normal to have an irregular period following a D & C, because the lining of the uterus is removed during the procedure and it takes some time for it to build up, so a woman's next cycle may come a little bit sooner or a little bit later than expected. It does take some time for the cervix to return to its normal size and until then, the woman is at risk for infection, and so don't put anything inside the vagina until your doctor says it's okay do so. Talk with them about when it's okay to use tampons and to resume intercourse. If you have more questions in the future for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
