Running in the Arctic | The winter experience of a runner in Northern Finland

Being an endurance runner in the harsh Arctic environment requires more than a mere desire to go for a run. Ultrarunners need to keep the kilometres up all year round. We need to run many hours almost on a daily bases. Now, imagine you'd have to do that throughout a long, dark and cold winter somewhere around the Arctic Circle Line. This is my life for the past six years.
Originally I'm from Bulgaria, but for my Master's studies, I moved to Rovaniemi, Northern Finland in 2015. Back then I just had my life started all over again. I experienced the importance of daily sport and a more healthy diet, something that I never had experienced before. It was 2014 when I started running for the first time in my life which completely changed my world for the better. Back then, only thinking about returning to my boring, sick and unhealthy lifestyle from before 2014 was deeply depressing.
And this was my biggest fear. How was I supposed to keep running daily in a winter that takes seven months; in the season of the Polar night that tides you to the couch, in a place where it gets dark at 2pm?
But Homo Sapiens is so adaptive! We have been through a few Ice Ages, we lived in caves, we used to move on average 30km a day for thousands of years. It shouldn't be impossible to be a runner in the Arctic.
This short movie shows how it looks to me to be an Arctic runner in the past six years. I hope it will inspire you for a more active lifestyle.
