A Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) measures the amount of air entering the engine. It sends this information to the engine ECM, which adjusts air and fuel accordingly to engine speeds and load conditions. If the mass airflow isn’t working properly, it will usually send a check engine light with the code P0101 or P0102 stating that the sensor isn’t working within manufacturer’s specifications. You don’t always have to replace a mass airflow sensor, there is a cleaner that is designed for mass airflow sensors. If you use any other kind of cleaner besides the kind designed for it specifically, it will usually make the MAF perform worse! If cleaning a mass airflow sensor does not improve the issue you’re experiencing, replacement will then be required. If a MAF isn't working properly, it can cause different problems such as stalling, low power, bad acceleration, and possibly a hard or no starting condition. If you disconnect the mass air flow sensor, it will allow the car to start and should idle. It still might not run perfect, but it will let you know that your mass air flow sensor isn’t working properly.
