Cab Calloway - St. Louis Blues

Cab Calloway & His Orchestra - St. Louis Blues

W.C. Handy's 'St. Louis Blues' was another side recorded on Cab Calloway and His Orchestra's debut recording date. R.Q. Dickerson's masterful talking/preaching trumpet and De Priest's rumbustious trombone opening for Cab, who starts his vocal opening for an amazing four bars before bursting into improvisation. St. Louis Blues was the first Cab Calloway recording to register on the best seller's list in December 1930. The band's informal riff is the same as that played by the Luis Russell Orchestra behind Louis Armstrong on his classic 1929 recording of the same tune.
