Note-taking is one of the most important tasks for students and aspirants. Making notes is not about copying, it is about brainstorming.
Taking notes is about summarising concepts, jotting down facts in such a way that they are easy to remember like using shortcuts and mnemonics.
Also, I want to tell you that I do not rely on a single method for note-taking. I use a different method of note-taking depending on the type of article that I am reading, or the source of material that I am using and mostly it depends on the mood.
Talking more about different methods there are few which are my favorite like-
↪︎Outline method
↪︎Cornell method,
↪︎Boxing method,
↪︎Chart method
↪︎Mind mapping method
Though here is catch every note-taking method has its own advantages and few drawbacks. Since in this post we are focusing mind map method - I will talk about that only.
When the lecture content is intense, and it is always the case in UPSC preparation or any other exam in India or elsewhere. And in such scenario, the mind mapping method works wonders.
Mind mapping helps in organising your notes. Simply by dividing the main topic into sub-branches, and establishing relationships between the topics.
You start with writing the main topic anywhere on the page. You keep dividing it into subheadings and subtopics, on the left, right, up, down as you move on.
By doing this exercise you make sure that you are not drifting away from the central idea. All the arrows make sense and connect to that one central idea.
Now let us discuss Step by Step
↪︎Step 1 - Create a Central Idea. The central idea is the starting point of your map. It represents the topic that we are going to explore.
↪︎Step 2 - Add Branches to Your Map. These are subtopics or subheadings. It represents a division of main topics in different parts.
↪︎Step 3 - Add keyword. Here you have to summarise the paragraphs and concepts in keywords. This is the skill that you will master over time. You will develop this skill as you read more and more.
↪︎Step 4 - Use colours. I am not fancy with more colours. But use the minimal theme and try to use 2-3 colours. And the rule of thumb is that - do not use more than 3 colours. Use highlighter. I use highlighter mostly to separate headings from subheadings.
↪︎Step 5 - Be creative. Use doodles, characters, emojis, small clipart’s or symbols. Make your notes more visually appealing.
These were the steps involved in creating a mind map. Now we will discuss the pros and cons of these methods and finally, we will make a mind map in real-time.
