Until 706 AD, all mosques were pointed toward "the City of the Prophet." Modern Muslims assume this to be Mecca, but Mecca is not mentioned in the Quran. Dr. Dan Gibson shows that in the early mosques, the direction of prayer, the Qibla, pointed toward Petra. The people that built these mosques knew how to navigate by the stars and therefore knew exactly where to direct their prayers.
