King concludes his attack against Gibson by saying, “In all such investigations, no conclusions should be drawn based on actual Qibla directions calculated from MODERN geographical data using some kind of EXACT mathematical procedures. Also, measurements and calculations to the nearest degree are inadequate for investigative purposes; any attempt at greater ‘accuracy’ is unrealistic.”

It seems King really doesn’t understand why Gibson used modern accurate measuring instruments. These were only employed to find out just how accurate or not the Qibla directions were. To suggest Gibson shouldn’t have done so, exposes his true agenda; he realizes Gibson, by using such accurate measuring devices, has done that which he should have done himself, but didn’t.

If this wasn’t bad enough, King then demonizes Gibson, saying, “But more seriously, Gibson’s writings are guaranteed to contribute to Islamophobia amongst those who have no idea about the one and only civilization which really took orientations seriously for over 1400 years.”

What King is basically saying is that to question Islam, even something as innocent as its mis-directed Qiblas, borders on a hatred of Islam, which will contribute to Islamophobia. How simply critiquing the direction of mosques would engender hatred he doesn’t say.

Would we likewise say the same thing for those who question Christianity’s foundations? Of course not, as we have always permitted anyone to question anything they wanted to, because Christianity can stand up under any criticism.

Nonetheless, within academia of early Islam there is growing evidence of a reticence by Western scholars to tolerate any deviation from the classical account of Islam’s beginnings. This is well evidenced by King’s quote against Gibson, where he weaponizes his argument by introducing the Politically Correct term ‘Islamophobia’, a term employed by the Liberal Left whenever they want to shut down any and all discussions or debates on subjects deemed ‘by them’ as anathema.

Jay gives a number of personal examples of this sort of censorship imposed upon him during his 25 years living in London, both on university campuses in the UK, and most recently in Hong Kong, in November of 2017 and 2018, where twice his lectures were shut down (once, even after he was already lecturing to a packed house). All that was required was for one Muslim student to go to the administration and call him an ‘Islamophobe’.

Yet, the greatest threat by Muslims and the Left against any criticism of Islam is leveled at apostate Muslim thinkers, who often lose their lives whenever they criticize Islam. To then have Western scholars like King use the same time of language against Gibson is not only disheartening, but disingenuous.

Here then are our final conclusions concerning this debate between King and Gibson:

1) Gibson referred to 7th and 8th century artefacts and evidence which existed at that time.
2) King only quoted much later 9th - 11th century scholars and borrowed their theories.
3) Gibson went to over 100 mosques to research his material.
4) King only went to 1 mosque, and primarily used 3-5 others to support his theories.
5) Gibson employed whatever evidence he found ‘on the ground’.
6) King imposed outdated ‘opinions’ and theories he came across in his readings.
7) Gibson used modern technology to understand the exact directions of the Qiblas.
8) King demanded we not use any technology, because it wasn’t fair to the Muslims.
9) Gibson responded to King’s riposte with grace and humility.
10) King used vitriol against Gibson, calling him an ‘Islamophobe’, and dangerous.
11) Few people seem to be accepting King’s views.
12) More and more people are coming around to Gibson’s views.
