In this video I go over 5 common roof construction types used in residential and commercial construction. This video is meant to be a carpentry 101 wood framing basics crash course.
The 5 roofs are the gable roof, the hip roof, the gambrel roof, the mansard roof & the flat roof.
I go over each component of the roof design and how it is framed as well as the roof plans for each which show their similarities and differences.
Few important things to note for Roof Construction:
- All rafters should sit directly on a wall stud below. This will ensure maximum strength
- All rafters in a hip roof in separate bays should align at the hip beam for maximum strength
- All rafters, wall studs & ceiling joists are typically 16" on center.
The Gable roof & Gambrel roof construction include these framing members:
Roof Rafters
Ridge
The Hip roof & Mansard roof construction include these framing members:
Roof Rafters
Hip Rafters or Beams
Ridge
The Flat roof construction includes these framing members:
Roof Rafters
Sleepers
Crickets
Roof drain
Parapet
Here are the basic wood framing steps that are under the roof in order from bottom to top:
- Set up footing form work & rebar
- Pour concrete footings
- Set up wall form work & rebar
- Pour concrete walls
- Steel work placed & 4" slab poured
- Termite shield
- Sill plate
- Floor joists
- Sub floor
- Sole plate
- Wall studs & Fire blocking
- Top plate
- Ceiling joists
- Ridge
- Roof rafters
- Fascia Board
