k.d. lang receives Honourary Doctorate - 2013
Transcript from University Of Regina site
Honorary degree recipient announced
As part of the University of Regina’s 2013 Fall Convocation on October 19, the University will present Canadian singer/songwriter/producer k.d. lang with the highest honour the institution can bestow – an honorary degree.
At the ceremony, which takes place at the Conexus Arts Centre at 1:00 p.m., University Chancellor Dr. Jim Tomkins will present lang with a Doctor of Fine Arts honoris causa (DFA) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to music and her achievements in the performing arts.
During her career, lang has won four Grammy Awards and eight JUNO Awards. Her influence on Canadian music was recognized in 1997 with the Order of Canada, followed by a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2008 and induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2013.
“k.d. lang has dedicated her life to the arts as a passionate singer, songwriter, and producer,” says University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons. “Perhaps more importantly, however, she has made it a priority to put her talents to work for others, lending her time and energy to benefit concerts and musical programs such as LIVE ART, and to support HIV/AIDS care and research. Her compassion for and service to others are inspiring, and she is a worthy recipient of an honorary degree from a University whose motto is ‘As One Who Serves.’”
“It is an honour to be recognized for the work that I have done over the years,” says lang. “I feel validated and inspired to be acknowledged by the University of Regina in this way.”
Previous recipients of University of Regina honorary degrees include former Saskatchewan premiers Tommy Douglas, Allan Blakeney, and Roy Romanow; former Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governors Sylvia Fedoruk and Lynda Haverstock; Saskatchewan artist Joe Fafard; hockey great Gordie Howe; The Princess Royal, Princess Anne; internationally renowned speed skater Catriona Le May Doan; Paralympic athlete Lisa Marie Franks; past president of the Saskatchewan Roughriders Tom Shepherd; and dozens of other outstanding researchers, artists, philanthropists, humanitarians and leaders.
