kd lang - Getaway 2011

Broadcast in May 2011.

The meeting of two women who possess singing voices that have audiences on their feet was quite an event. Kate Ceberano met KD Lang in Melbourne, their mutually favourite Australian city.

KD's musical career spans 28 years and her soaring voice is loved by millions. Madonna's famous line, "Elvis is alive and she's beautiful", sums her up.

She has won eight Juno Awards, four Grammy Awards, has contributed songs on film soundtracks and has teamed with Roy Orbison, Sir Elton John and Tony Bennett. He said she is the best singer of her generation! Fellow Canadian Michael Bublé has called her "the greatest female singer in the whole world".

Her live rendition of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada brought the house down.

KD is an activist for animal rights, gay rights, Tibetan human rights and is a Buddhist and vegan. She is an official of the prestigious Order or Canada and has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.

She told Kate she adores Melbourne because it's a great waking city. She really enjoys the inner-suburban Fitzroy for its bohemian culture, street art and culture. She can see herself spending half the time living somewhere in Melbourne. She's written about the city, has sung a Melbourne song ('I Dream of Spring' on her Watershed album refers to Melbourne) and she has just covered Little River Band's 'Reminiscing' on her 13 studio album Sing It Loud.

Both women are used to life on the road and have found places they like to frequent. KD took Kate to family-owned Abla's Lebanese Restaurant in Carlton. The institution has been serving delicious meals for 32 years. KD has eaten there so many times she is on friendly terms with Abla Amad, who is known as the queen of Lebanese cooking. Her recipes have been handed down from one generation to the next.

As Kate and KD tucked in to Abla's delights, they agreed that they are taking eating back into vogue, KD reckons skinny girls can't sing and as both women have been successful in the industry for the same amount of time, maybe a few curves do help.

After they had their fill, they decided to take a ride on a Yarra tram. It didn't matter where, but much to the delight of other passengers, particularly a singing teacher, they sang 'Reminiscing'. What a stroke of luck to board a tram and be treated to such a mini-concert. Kate was as thrilled as the other people on board and said she could die on the spot and be the happiest girl in Melbourne!

It was time for Kate to show KD one of her favourite places in Melbourne. The National Gallery of Victoria. It was founded in 1861 and is the oldest and largest public art gallery in Australia. At its 150th anniversary unveiling in February this year, Kate led the Australian Youth choir singing 'Happy Birthday'.

The Great Hall ceiling is one of the largest stained glass ceilings in the world and Kate remembers visits when she was a little girl. The glorious Leonard French creation is made of 224 triangular sections in 50 colours. It took five years to complete. It's inspirational and uplifting and Kate says the best way to admire it is to lie down and look up.
