LET’S FIGHT TOOTH SENSITIVITY TOGETHER

If the taste of an ice-cream or a sip of coffee is sometimes painful, or brushing and flossing makes you wince occasionally ~ you may have a problem called “Sensitive teeth”.~ American Dental Association.
According to Academy of General dentistry, approximately 40 million adults alone in in United States suffer from sensitive teeth.

Do you know what causes tooth sensitivity?
Acidic food and carbonated drinks
Dental cavity
Nail biting, chewing on pens, pipe smoking, grinding your teeth (bruxism)
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
Plaque buildup, periodontal disease
Aggressive brushing
Teeth whitening products

If you feel that you have sensitive teeth, don’t worry and overthink about it. Instead take necessary action. The management of sensitive teeth is very simple.
1) Schedule an appointment with your dentist. He will discern some possible causes like plaque or gum disease, old fillings or tooth decay that can cause tooth sensitivity.

If your tooth sensitivity is mild, the dentist will prescribe you a toothpaste for sensitive teeth
Use –
Sensodyne repair and protect toothpaste
Crest sensitivity complete protection toothpaste
Colgate sensitive pro leave repair and prevent toothpaste
Terms of Main rapid relief centre every toothpaste
Twice daily use for four weeks provides relief from sensitivity

2)Use an alcohol free mouth rinse.

3) Use a soft bristle toothbrush and gently brush your teeth back and forth using short strokes.

4) In case sensitivity prolongs, the dentist will recommend fluoride treatment. Research suggest that fluoride application in the form of solution, gel and worn it causes instant and long-term relief from Dentyne hyper sensitivity. Also it strengthens your tooth and reduces pain.

5)Other options include application of dentin-bonding agent, Composite, glass Ionomers, inlay/crown placement and in the last stage the dentist might recommend a root canal treatment

6) If you have receding gums a gum surgery or graft can be used

7) Laser treatment can also be used.

8)In case of gastrointestinal reflux disease, treatment includes changes in dietary habits, medications like antacid, proton pump inhibitors and antidiarrhoeal drugs.

9) Teeth grinding (bruxism) can be treated by wearing mouthguards or taking some muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety medication and botox injections.

To conclude~
Make a habit of visiting your dentist twice annually it goes without saying that prevention is better than cure.

Follow three simple rules for a good oral hygiene every day. Brush – floss – rinse.

Don’t procrastinate if you have a dental problem. Report to your dentist immediately.

A diet low in acidic food and drinks increases the life expectancy of your teeth
