Discover Dark Skies in Scotland

See Scotland at night with a truly unforgettable dark sky experience. Wrap up warm and head out to one of the many dark sky parks and sites across Scotland that are officially recognised as places you can spot constellations and galaxies due to their low levels of light pollution. Did you know we have an island designated as a ‘dark sky community’? The Isle of Coll off the west coast of mainland Scotland was recognised in 2013 as a great place to stargaze, especially from August to March when the skies are at their darkest.

Among the stars you may also be lucky enough to spot the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. These ‘mirrie dancers’ are a real sight to see and are best spotted in our northern, rural areas. Scotland lies at the same latitude as Stavanger in Norway and Nunivak Islands in Alaska, meaning you’ve got a higher chance of admiring the twinkling colours, shapes and patterns of this rare phenomenon in Scotland too.
